Giving Back

In the sprit of the holidays, G-Rugby raised over $200 to buy food for the Greensboro Urban Ministry.  The team donated a total of 402 pounds of much needed food and clothing to the local outreach agency.  

Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this happen!  Its awesome when a team can come together and help out those in need, especially during a very busy time of year!  For more information out the Greensboro Urban Ministry, click here!

Ready for Rugby?!

Just a reminder that our first practice of the season is tomorrow!  Please bring a mouth guard, cleats, sneakers and your school ID.  The field is wet from this weekend's rain, so we may have to move inside, but we are trying to stay outside for as long as possible!  Please also bring a water bottle!!

Don't forget that if you are buying equipment for this season, any layers you wear under your jersey or shorts need to be navy blue or black! 

the SPRING 2010 SEASON!!

Hello Ladies!

As the 2010 season draws near, its time to talk about practice!  This year, Tara will be taking over as head coach, along with her fiance Gabe.  Both of them have a ton of experience, have played high level rugby and are excited to be part of the team.  As for me, I will still be around at practice, but only as support for Tara and Gabe and you guys.   As some of you know, our practice times for the semester are now Monday 8-10, Tuesday 8-10 and Thursday 9-11.  We will also be holding 2 additional fitness practices, where we will focus on running and sprinting and getting our endurance up.

Since we don't need a field for these practices, here are some options for us.  If you are going to VEGAS you need to vote because you have to come to at least one of them per week.

POSSIBLE FITNESS PRACTICE TIMES

Sunday - any time after 4 (2 hr blocks, so let me know if something doesn't work)

Wed - 6-8AM; any time after 4

Fri - 6-8AM; any time after 4

Please let me know by FRIDAY what times work and DON'T work for you.  Everyone should try to come to these practices so I am going to try to make it work for everyone on the team. You will get an email Saturday with the practice times and what you need to bring!

OK ENOUGH WITH THE VEGAS STUFF!

Because its WINTER, its cold.  (duh) So everyone is going to be getting longed sleeved things to wear under their jerseys.  They must be black or navy!!  They should not have zippers or weird buttons or look like you stole them from Guilford or the Women's Ultimate team!  At practice, make sure you wear layers, as you might get hot while you run, but cold while you do a drill.  Bring long pants, your mouthguard, water, cleats and sneakers (you never know when we need to move inside)

PRACTICE STARTS THE 25th!!  OUR FIRST GAME IS THE 30th at HOME vs WAKE!

Everyone is welcome to come to the fitness practices - actually you are encouraged and you will be a better rugby player if you do. yay!  We might have a fitness practice the first week of school, but it is completely optional :D

UNCG WRFC supports St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital

On Monday, September 28th the UNCG Women's Rugby team decided that instead of gearing up for practice, they would gear up for a Team Dinner at Chili's Bar & Grille. Chili's has a partnership with St. Jude's Children's Hospital and one day a year, the restaurant donates 100% of their profits to the hospital. So far, Chili's has raised over 25 million dollars for the St. Jude's, and has provided children and their families with better therapies, more support, and better research opportunities.

Pediatric Cancer is devastating, and there's nowhere near enough funding from the government. Many grassroots efforts and amazing partnerships such as Chilis/St. Jude's provide a lot of of the funding for research for cures. Here is an alarming statistic: "There are 15 children diagnosed with cancer for every 1 child diagnosed with pediatric AIDS. Yet, the US invests approximately $595,000 for research per victim of pediatric AIDS, and only $20,000 for each victim of pediatric cancer." Those are scary numbers!!

This isn't the first time the team has come together to support this worthy cause. Over the last five years, the team has made it out to 4 St. Jude's nights at Chilis!

The team has a lot more planned in the way of volunteering and philanthropy, so stay tuned!!

Women's Premiere League Rugby

This year marks the beginning of Premiere Rugby for women in the United States! There are 8 teams participating in this league; in the Red Conference are the Berkeley All-Blues, The Twin City Amazons, Minnesota Valkyries and the Oregon Sports Union. In the Blue Conference are Beantown (Boston), New York, Keystone (PA) and the Washington Furies (DC - we have seen them play! Remember when we went to NCSU and watched the Women's game?). Hopefully some of these games will get some coverage in the media, besides just press releases from USA Rugby, but its awesome to see Women's Rugby being played at such a high level!

Summer!

Happy Summer everyone! I hope everyone is having a great summer!

So, because we are not all in Greensboro (or in NC for that matter) and going to be busy, I am hoping that this blog and emails from your captains will inspire you to be better rugby players! I am going to be posting on here about 2-3 times a week, including "Workout Wednesday" and "Video Friday". I am hoping to find new ideas for workouts, fun rugby videos and new information about the game to share with everyone. And you can share too!! Have a link you want to post? Email it to me! A favorite video of an amazing play? Email it to me! A great workout routine? Email it to me! I will try to post everything you send to me, plus anything I come across in my internet searching.

VT GAME ANNOUNCEMENT!

GET YOUR PROM DRESSES READY!

Ladies - we will be playing Virgina Tech on APRIL 25, 2009, in a PROM DRESS MATCH! We are also going to be spending the night there, either at a hotel, or crashing on some floors (we'll see what we can do).

If you have not purchased a dress, start looking. Goodwill, Carolina Thrift and Yard Sales are always good places to look. Pack will need to be able to wear rugby shorts under their dress, so plan accordingly!!

You Give the Blood, We'll Play the Rugby

YOU GIVE THE BLOOD, WE'LL PLAY THE RUGBY! FEB. 21, 2009 UNCG REC FIELD

Support your local Women's rugby team at our round-robin match! This year we were fortunate enough to have the American Red Cross come to the games with the Bloodmobile, so it's the perfect opportunity to donate some much-needed blood and watch two great rugby matches!

The games are at 11am and 1pm, featuring UNCG vs Guilford College and Duke University vs Wake Forest.
The Bloodmobile will be set up near the field from 11am to 3:30pm.
